Dos and DonTs of an Intern free essay sample

An intern is someone who works in a temporary position with an emphasis on on-the- job training rather than merely employment, making it similar to an apprenticeship. Interns are usually college or university students seeking skills for a new career. Student internships provide opportunities for students to gain experience in their field, determine if they have an interest in a particular career, create a network of contacts, and gain school credit. Here are some Dos and Dont to be observed during your internship: The Dos: Do dress to impress. Dont look at how the other interns there are dressed; you are not trying to impress them. You are trying to impress the actual professionals. Look at the way the professionals are dressed and mimic that exactly, even if you are not required to dress up. It shows that you are looking to work with them as their equal, not as their gofer. This is basically a first impression every single morning. You dont want to start the morning off looking bad by arriving late. Remember that you havent landed a Job yet and if you get fired from an internship because you re always showing up late, this will look very bad on you and you wont be able to use that company as a reference or potentially as a Job. Just come to work every day on time, even if you have to wake up three hours before you have to be there. Do speak in a professional manner. Dont speak to these professionals as you would speak to your friends. You shouldnt be using slang or slurring your words. Speak grammatically correct and sound professional. Your employer does not want to hear you say something like no liar, ah (yes). That looks so bad. Do keep busy. If you dont now what you should be doing, ask someone if they need help with anything. Find something to do. Standing around and doing nothing doesnt look very good. It looks like you are lazy and dont know how to get the Job done. Keep in mind that youre supposed to impress them, not turning them away. Do observe the establishment working hours and rules and regulation strictly. Do request for an Employee handbook from the establishment. Do observe the safety, health and security at the establishment. Do ask questions. If you dont know how to do something, then ask. If you do something wrong, it may cost he company a lot of time and money to fix it. Dont Just assume that you know what youre doing. You dont want to get distracted by the vibration and then try to find a time when no one is looking so you can look at your phone. Just concentrate on the Job and keeping busy. Dont chew gum. Your manager does not want to see your gum sticking out of your mouth when the two of you are talking. So little things like chewing gum while working, you shouldnt do. Wait until after you get out doing that. Dont wear visible piercing. Its perfectly okay to have piercing. However, if you are in an atmosphere where you think for one second that maybe you shouldnt wear your piercing, dont do it. You want to present yourself in a positive, professional way. If you walk in with a tongue ring, an eye brow ring, the dimple piercing, and a lion ear rings in your ears, you are not going to look professional. Dont leave the property during working hours or during meal break without a valid exit pass or informing your superior. You may be classified as AIM (missing in action) and will not look good on your appraisal at the end of the training. Dont remove documents, items that belong to the establishment without an authorized Property removal pass. Not even a match box must be removed found on you when exiting the property. This may account to stealing. Dont entertain or meeting friends and relatives at your working place Dont get your arent or family involved during your internship. If you are interning with that company, anything they tell you to do is your Job, and you need to do it. Saying that something isnt your Job is probably the worst thing that you could say. Just do what they ask you to do, no matter what it is. Dont burn any bridges even if your internship was not the best An internship is such a great thing to have because it gives you connections to the industry that you might be working in. So make sure you keep these dos and dont in mind.
